In the Outlander owner's manual it says use gasoline with an octane rating of at least 87 but then it also says "Research octane number 91".

Not sure what that is supposed to mean. I get that it is ok to use 87 grade fuel but do they prefer if we use 91 grade fuel?

Welcome to the forum @greystorm.

The EPA is usually an accurate source and they say our Outlanders use 'Regular Gasoline' which is quite often 87 octane. I guess in some cases 89 can be considered that as well.

Same thing. 87 octane in US, Canada is equivalent of 91 RON in most of the rest of the world.
