GT over SEL (Canada)?

1735 Views 39 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  ontheroad
I put a deposit down on an ES phev but was told the wait time could be 6 months or longer (nobody knows and priority is going to high trims). I spoke with a nearby dealership today and they can get me an SEL in 3-4 weeks or a GT right away (it's on their lot). Both are my colour choice (white) and appear to be at msrp without any bogus fees: SEL = $59953, GT = $62791.

So, I'm tempted to just dive in and buy one of them. The only things that would push me towards the GT are the Bose audio and Mi-Pilot Assist (and only the LKA interests me). Can anyone tell me if the LKA works well and if the Bose is really high quality audio? Or is the regular stereo fine?

Thanks!

i was thinking about the gt . im a leather seat guy plus wanted the hud . first one in was a sel so i took it since it still had the birds eye cam . turns out i love the seat covers on this thing so no regrets plus hate the 20 inch rims so win win . the stereo is actually pretty good .

hope this helps
We had ordered a GT but had to settle for the SEL as our dealer was only getting one GT per month and we were number 50 on the wait list for the PHEV. The new SEL has even more features than our 2018 GT had.
The Bose sub-woofer takes up the spot in the cargo where I put the charger and extension cord in the SEL. There are no other compartments in the cargo area on the GT to stow a EVSE if you want keep one in the car for a destination charge. I had the Rockford-Fosgate system in my previous Outlander and the system in the SEL is better than that so no complaints on the audio. If you do a lot of highway driving you may find the LKA and MI-PILOT to be useful, just take it for a drive first to see if you like it. Go for a highway drive, at first I didn't like the adaptive cruise control but got used to it and find it more useful than standard cruise control but took some driving for me to see the benefit. Otherwise the GT is a lot of dough for a sound system upgrade and HUD.

I put in my own phone induction charger (GT option). But had to use the 12v outlet for it. The USB ports don't supply enough power for my induction charger that I bought.
when I put my deposit, it was for a car with the MI-pilot and I thought the SEL would have it, level of equipment was fine. Finally it had to be a GT and the first model that came in at the garage was a white GT-P. I decided to plunge although more expensive. Very happy with it, lots of $$$ I agree, but I love the LKA, and all driving help functions of the system. You have to get used to it a bit, it´s keeping you more in the center of the street then I usually do. HUD is great plus, the Bose system is great sounding, especially with electronic device such as my iPhone. Sound imaging is very well ´defined’, but I don’t see the difference with the Bass speaker. I must admit that what I love most is the backdoor opening automatically with the foot movement, very useful finally, as well as the charging pad for my iPhone.

But I was coming from a nice car Mazda Cx-5, with few equipments and option. So it’s a great upgrade!
I have had the GT phev now for over a week. Love the ride and options. Wanted GT for the advanced functions as we will do a lot of highway driving in summer mi-pilot and lka were key. Stereo is excellent just adjusted bass to be a bit more prominent and love kick opening of tailgate. HUD supposed to show audio can’t seem to get it to show yet. For me previous car had HUD can’t live without it. Great model
Thanks for the replies. Sounds like the regular stereo is sufficient, so it really just comes down to the MI-pilot - not sure if that's worth 3k but I do like the idea of being able to eat a burger while driving and not worrying about veering off the road.

One thing that bothered me about all upper trims is the reduced headroom in the 2nd row as a result of the sunroof: there seemed to be much more headroom in the base ES; has anyone else noticed this?

Also, can someone tell me if the leather seats are quality material and worth the upgrade over cloth? They're described as "leather-appointed" but the salesperson didn't know what that meant. Is it a mix of real & faux material? I'd actually prefer fake leather.
It it sure about the leather. the GT P probably has softer leather. The GT leather is not soft but the seats look great with same door panels. there is reduced bedroom but I am 6’ 2” and just make it Because you actually sit behind the hump of the sun roof. Should be no problem for anyone shorter than 6 feet.

Re: MI-PILOT, I believe you still need your hands on the steering wheel hopefully someone with experience can confirm or correct.

Re: leather-appointed on the SEL and GT, they are very near leather but not as soft. I have no complaints on the material quality. However, I have not touched the premium version in the GT-P but I recall reviewers commenting on it be "supple" so I imagine it is nicer feeling than on the SEL and GT.

You're right, hands need to be on the wheel for LKA to steer the car, I just read it on Mitsubishi Canada website. So that removes my main reason for wanting the GT.

According to various car websites, "leather-appointed" is a mix of real and fake leather. I'm not sure if that's the case on the Outlander though - when I sat in an SEL the seat material looked and felt synthetic, so I'm not sure where the real leather is.

On another note, does anyone know if ES trims are even being sent to dealerships in Canada at present? I've only heard of people getting higher trims, so for all I know I could be holding out for an ES that isn't going arrive until 2024. Does anyone on here (in Canada) have an ES?
Yes, people in other threads (or forums) have been receiving ES trims and when I was looking in December, one of the locals had an ES. Each dealership will order from an allocation of trims, some have more allocated than others.

Good to know, thanks for confirming.

I don't mean to hijack my own thread, but I just found a local dealership with an LE on their lot - MSRP, no added fees. I hadn't considered the LE trim because I've never experienced faux suede and would be worried about stains/keeping it clean and nice-looking over the long-term (will be a family car with baby in 2nd row). But it's a nice mid-point between ES and SEL...so now wondering if I should consider it.

Does anyone have an LE or any experience with faux suede seats?
Had our GT 2 weeks today, I have been using the LKA everytime I'm on the highway and its been nice. Have to keep a slight bit of pressure on the wheel with one hand to stop the hand warning from popping up. I can say I've never felt so relaxed driving and I like it a lot. There has been a couple instances where I had to take over based on weird merging traffic scenarios but it's working well. I've also tried it on slower back roads and it's handling bends in the road well!. I liked the look of the GT diamond stitch pattern being wider than the GT-P with the narrow orange strip. The leather is soft and quality feeling for sure.

I put in my order for an LE in Gatineau. About 4 weeks later, my dealer had an SEL available and called to see if I wanted it. I crunched a ton of numbers and decided to go for it.

Yes, it’s pricer, but the leather is much nicer, the rain sensing wipers are cool and the heated rear seats might get you lots of use depending on how often the back seats are used. For me, it’s not that often, but when someone is back there, they’ve been really appreciated.

If you try to use LKA without your hands on the wheel, what happens? Does it simply not function or does it work but you get warnings after a few seconds (that's what happens with Lexus LKA - with no hands on wheel it works for around 10 secs and then beeps at you & stops working).
Works the same as your Lexus more or less, one hand light pressure will keep the warnings from popping up all though.

You guys are very brave to be getting phev in major cold climate country because in cold climates range from powder from battery is reduced do to temperature. Personally living in Oklahoma will never buy EV or hybryd.

Ok, I’ll bite.
How much electric range do you think is lost in 0F temperatures?
You’re aware that a PHEV also has a gas motor, so that you should be able to get wherever you need to go, no matter the weather? You just spend money and carbon burning gas. Not ideal and might change the economics a bit.
